No audio from iMac Target Display mode

Summary: No audio from iMac connected to MacBook Pro using Target Display mode. Used to work fine, but stopped working recently, presumably after Mojave upgrade. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Enable Target Display mode on iMac (2013-late) connected to Macbook Pro (2014-mid). 2. On MacBook Pro, select sound output device to iMac. 3. Play any sound. Expected Results: Sound output from iMac internal speaker. Actual Results: No sound from iMac at all. Version/Build: Both iMac and MacBook Pro run latest macOS Mojave (10.14.2) Configuration: N/A

Did you ever get a fix for this? Driving me mad that I can't get audio to play through my iMac in TDM since the update to Mojave on my 2019 MacBook Pro 15". Please let me know if there was ever a solution given - did upgrading to Catalina fix this for you?
